A Welcome from Dean Victoria Vaughan Dickson
Dr. Victoria Vaughan Dickson, Ph.D., RN, FAHA, FAAN, is the 11th Dean and Professor of the UConn Elisabeth DeLuca School of Nursing, and professor in the UConn School of Medicine. Prior to joining UConn in 2023, Dr. Dickson served as the John W. Rowe Professor of Successful Aging, Assistant Dean for Research Innovation, and Director of the Pless Center for Nursing Research at the NYU Rory Meyers College of Nursing.
Building on her extensive clinical experience as a nurse practitioner, Dr. Dickson’s research focuses on the social determinants of health and biobehavioral influences on self-care among individuals, families, and communities with or at risk for cardiovascular disease.
Her work has advanced understanding of the sociocultural factors that influence self-care among vulnerable populations and led to the development of innovative, theory-based interventions. An internationally recognized expert in mixed methods research, Dr. Dickson has provided training to interdisciplinary research teams around the world. She is committed to building research capacity across disciplines and advancing nursing science that informs policy and improves clinical care.
She was principal investigator of the NHLBI-funded R25 Research Education in Cardiovascular Conditions Program and the NIOSH-funded doctoral training program in Occupational and Environmental Health Nursing. She also served as co-principal investigator of the NINR-funded P20 Exploratory Center for Precision Health in Diverse Populations and as KL2 co-director and co-investigator of the NCATS-funded NYU Clinical and Translational Science Institute.
Dr. Dickson has received numerous awards for her research and leadership; she is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing and the American Heart Association and was inducted into the Sigma theta Tau International Nursing Researcher Hall of Fame in 2019. Currently, she serves as the Editor of the Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing and on the editorial board of the European Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing. She is the past Chair of the Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science (CANS), a signature initiative of the American Academy of Nursing dedicated to promoting better health through nursing science.
